Hi, I really love your archivist loose in oiar au :DDD do you think Jon sings to April sometimes? since he was in the mechanisms and therefore knows how to. What do you think their relationship is like in general? Also, if tmagp!Jon(aka April's original father) could see his daughter and her. new?? father now, what would he think? Sorry for so many questions, no pressure to answer of course!

And I am always happy to answer questions about April, and the AU in general, so don’t apologise! This is enrichment for me.
Answering the questions in order: Jon absolutely sings for April. I’ve had an art piece in mind I hope to do eventually of him singing her to sleep. I think music in general is very important to the both of them, because Jon is… well, Jon. He isn’t exactly an expert at conveying how he feels, and music tends to bridge that gap for him, especially on the more emotionally taxing days.
Their relationship as a whole will be delved into within the fic later on, but I’m still happy to talk about it! I think the most fundamental thing I keep in mind when considering writing them or how I���ll write them in the future is that their relationship, however strong it is, will always be haunted by Jon’s guilt. He woke up in this universe alone, in a bed that wasn’t his, with a toddler that wasn’t his, and a life that wasn’t his. He was not doing well those first few weeks. Truthfully, he wasn’t in the right place to be looking after a child, but he couldn’t just give her up, no. He took over this man’s life, and that guilt haunts him. He has to something right. He has to look after her. It’s the least he can do.
In the end, April is the thing that grounds him. She represents this new life of his, and is something he finds he has to keep on living for, something he has to stay ‘human’ for, however much of that is a lie. He doesn’t expect to love her as much as he does, despite the struggle that comes with raising a child alone. Working nights isn’t really ideal either, but it’s the only job he knows that keeps him well-fed. So, he works around it.
He tries to make up for it where he can, and remembers the things his grandma did for him when he was upset. It’s a ritual now for him to give April a bowl of fruit when she’s upset now, whether that be at him or because of school. Or he’ll sing. Or ask if she wants to watch a movie. Sometimes he’ll ask her to help him cook. It’s the little things that define their dynamic.
From April’s side of things, she genuinely isn’t upset when Elias has to take her to school in 001. A few years ago, she would have been, but she fancies herself very clever for an eight-year/ old, and she’s caught notice of how other kids at school have two parents instead of one. She knows she used to have another dad — Martin — and that her dad lost him when she was young, and she rationalises that it must be hard having to take care of a kid by yourself — especially a kid like her — and internalises that. Teachers at school tell her she’s a hassle to deal with, so surely her dad feels the same. There is also an element of kid logic to how she rationalises it, which will be seen in upcoming chapters, but good lord, so many of the Sims family issues would be solved if they just communicated.
(That will also be a problem later).
April doesn’t exactly have many friends at school either. She’s a much better at talking to adults than talking to kids her own age. For that reason, her dad and Elias are some of the only grounding aspects of her life, and she feels as though she has to prove herself worthy of even that.
On a less painful note, she also gives her dad something she calls ‘April hugs’ whenever she thinks he’s had a bad day at work. They’re magical. They make everything better. Jon will stare you to death if you dare to suggest otherwise.
I guess the summary of this very incoherent ramble is ‘autistic father with emotional communication problems raises an autistic daughter with similar emotional communication problems, and they love each other a lot and often times it feels like it’s them against the world, but they’d really benefit from Jon sitting down and being open with April, allowing her to do the same’.
And God, that last question is fascinating. If we’re being honest, I don’t think he’d take too kindly to it at all. What TMA!Jon has essentially done is not so different from the Not!Them, if you sit down and think about it, and Imagine you’re TMAGP!Jon, and you see a man who almost resembles you, playing with your daughter, and she knows who he is, but she doesn’t know who you are. She’s older now too. How much of her life have you missed? It’s… horrifying, really. That’s why there will always be a guilty factor to Jon and April’s relationship. He thinks about the alternate version of him more than he’d like to admit, and he’s come to the very understandable conclusion that the man would certainly hate him.

The Survivors, part 2

Leo is a huge nerd and a geek who knows everything about zombies - fictional ones, anyway. He's read every comic, watched just about every movie, and played every Resident Evil game, so he considers himself quite the expert on the subject.
He'll happily talk about it for hours with anybody who listens, but he's quite terrified of running into an actual zombie.

Fred had a family, once. Well, his real family was too busy yachting and schmoozing at the country club to pay him much attention, but he also had a REAL family: his team. When the world went crazy, the highschool quarterback and football captain didn't hesitate to round up his team to face the zombies head on. But tragedy struck while the team was in the midst of a raid (at the Academy Sports for new cleats, running shorts, etc.). The zombies descended upon them, and while every Hail Mary Fred threw cleanly tore a zombie's head right off; the Academy Sports only had so many brand new footballs. Fred and his buddy, Jace, were the only survivors, but Jace left soon after to join some kind of cult upstate. Which is whatever. Fred was barely even invested in their increasingly homoerotic subplot. There's a sadness in his eyes now, but Fred still carries hope that one day a new generation will have all the opportunities he's lost. Like the chance to pledge Phi Betta Kappa and throw a truly raging kegger.
4/8/9/6/5, Popularity, Gay (but closeted about it).
Strengths: Great upper body, all the charisma of a formal high school football captain
Weaknesses: Will join literally any team no matter how many visible knives they're carrying, daddy issues
☢️Jaclyn Clove (Sim & bio by @moocha-muses )
You know who you REALLY want on your apocalypse team? A former eagle scout. Jackie earned every badge you CAN earn and then some. She can start fires. She can tie knots. She can gut a fish. She can identify useful herbs and edible mushrooms, sew up torn cloths, do basic and intermediate first aid, AND she won the archery contest three years running.
She also has a degree in History, if that means anything to you. (It doesn't.) Given the current job market, the apocalypse might actually have been a blessing.
7/6/7/4/9, Knowledge, Bi
Strengths: pretty much every outdoor skill, good stamina, citizenship, knows a lot about the ancient Greeks and the Roman Empire
Weaknesses: way too helpful for her own good. once caught a zombie in a rope trap and felt so bad for it she nearly let it out.

Lemon spent the thirty years before the apocalpyse running a junkyard. Unsurprisingly, they can repair basically anything, and, more importantly, they don't need things like manufacturer approved parts to do it. Lemon's used to their own company, and if they were twenty years younger they'd probably try to ride the apocalypse out by themselves, but it'd be nice to have some kids around to do the actual fighting and scouting, Their knees just aren't what they used to be.

So last night I couldn't fall asleep, and in my long time lying awake I came up with an idea for a video game that I would 100% play:
A farming sim, but designed to teach about regenerative and sustainable agriculture 🌱
I've noticed that in a lot of farming sims, it's possible and even encouraged to plant big monoculture fields with no negative impact on yield. In contrast I would love to see a game implement mechanics like soil health, soil moisture levels and different irrigation techniques, companion planting etc. This would actively encourage you as the player to plant your crops in polycultures and take care of the soil in order to maximize your yields.
The game could also implement loads of other communtiy-focused elements, like maybe some side quests about helping a neighbour open a repair cafe, teaching your community the planting techniques you've learnt, selling your crops at farmers markets etc.
It would also be super cool if the game provided extra resources to learn more about the regenerative agriculture techniques it uses. I'm thinking links to books, papers etc. included into the gameplay at relevant points, whenever the player character learns something new. It would be super cool if experienced farmers and growers were involved in the design of the game as well to share their expertise!
I'd love to make this game one day but I'm not an expert game dev and life is super busy so I feel like it's just one of those ideas that I might just eventually forget about :') butttt if anyone reads this who is a game dev and likes the idea feel free to steal it!!

PotO: Erik's house floor plan (book based)

While there already exists a pretty cool floor plan of Erik's house (this one) it's constructed around the idea that there is a shore or rock formation on which the house is built and that it looks like an actual house. That didn't sit with me as the book clearly says that the house is built inside the double casing of the foundation, so I made my own model. And yes, I totally built it in the Sims.
Things we know from Leroux that helped me build the model:
The placement of the house in between the inner and outer wall of the foundation suggests that it would be roughly rectangle-shaped
There must be some kind of small platform on which you could step out from the boat. A hidden mechanism must then move a part of the wall to reveal the actual door to the house, similar to the entrance from the third cellar
The entrance from the Lake opens directly to the drawing room. I'm no expert on Victorian architecture but it appears to me that a drawing room is basically a living and based on some photos of Victorian houses I saw I concluded that there'd be a fireplace and possibly some shelves for books, even if they are not directly mentioned in the novel. Erik would also surely have a rug. Persian of course ;-)
A door in the drawing room leads directly into the Louis-Philippe room. Connected directly to it there is also an en-suite bathroom. There is also an additional door that supposedly leads to the Torture Chamber. There is a fireplace (Erik/Christine mention the scorpion and grasshopper boxes on the mantelpiece), a bed set, some kind of sofa, and a chest of drawers.
Considering how the Torture Chamber is shaped and what it does, as well as the fact that Daroga is unable to find the hidden latch on the wall that the Chamber shares with Louis-Philippe (the wall on which the peeping window must be located) I concluded that the door mentioned by Christine must actually lead to a sort of oddly shaped room/corridor that goes around the chamber where the heating system and mechanical elements are located (this unfortunately couldn't be properly rendered due to the limitations of the game). From there you can access the actual Chamber by pushing a plain frameless door. Since it opens inwards and has no handles, in order to open it from the Chamber, you'd have to resort to some kind of spring system as described in the book.
We know that the dining is accessed from the drawing room. Considering it's the dining, it must also be connected to a kitchen and pantry from which, I'd assume, one could access the cellars with wine, water, and whatever else Erik might keep in there
After dinner, Erik takes Christine's hand and shows her his room. There is no mention of them first going back to the drawing room. That led me to believe that the door to Erik's room is located in the dining room. The drawing room has enough doors as is anyway.
Leroux mentions a pipe organ that takes up an entire wall. I know organs are large but I think it would be the narrower one. Then we have the coffin in the middle (unfortunately the Sims didn't have anything I could use as the canopy), a desk the exact location of which is unknown but I'd place it near the organ, possibly some wardrobe or chest of drawers, and probably a door to another en-suite bathroom as I imagine he wouldn't be using the one attached to the Louis-Philippe.

Hi! I saw your posts about making a game, do you mind talking about how you learned/are learning to make games? I'm interested in getting into game development as a hobby, how'd you get started?
oh boy!
First off, I'm flattered you asked. I would not consider myself an expert by any means necessary, but I can write about my process and what I've been doing to learn.
Some background: I work for the Department of Education in the USA as part of a grant at a university. I love my job: it takes all of my favorite parts of teaching (I was a high school English teacher for 10 years) and removes all the parts I dislike (grading, parents, ect.). I get to help people, genuinely help people who need it the most.
That said, Trump won the election, and one of his threats was to eliminate the Department of Education. And it's a very real threat that six months, a year, four years from now, my job may not exist.
So, I've been looking into a possible alternate career path, as a precaution. Hopefully it's not necessary, but just in case.
I've always been interested in video games and video game designs. I've been an avid player of games since I was 4, and I've been playing video game RPGs since I was ten. I've been a dungeon master since 2011, and I've GM'd tons of games, making puzzles, dungeons, homebrewing monsters, ect.
When I was a kid, I would have told you my dream job was writing video games for Bioware. In some ways, that's still my dream job. However, one doesn't just get handed a job at a game studio to be a writer: you have to have more to bring to the table.
The thing that has always held me back is my lack of programming knowledge. Where do you start?
step one: figure out what you want to make
while this may sound easy, I found it complicated. I want to make everything. I wanna make RPGs. I want to make farming sims. I want to do X, and Y, and Z.
Right now, I have three projects I'm "working" on:
A stardew valley clone. This is my high priority right now. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel; I figure this will teach me everything I need to know to go further (basic combat, basic level design, night/day shifts, calendars, NPC interactions, relationship tracking, ect.) If I ever get to the point where I'm thinking of publication, I do have a unique selling point: in my game, you will have a magical pocket watch that can slow down, speed up, or even pause time.
A cozy zelda-inspired dungeon crawler. You have a party, you go into dungeons, you solve puzzles and fight monsters.
My big one: a Fire-Emblem x Stardew Valley crossover RPG. More on that when I get to it.
I've decided to focus all my efforts on the first one because, again, that seems like the easiest one to make/find guides for.
step two: find an engine
Games run on game engines. And there are a lot out there to choose from: Unity, Unreal, GameMaker, RPGMaker, Godot, Ren'py, ect. I've played around with all of them. I gave serious consideration to Ren'py because of it's simplicity. However, Ren'py is made for visual novels, and while it can have gameplay elements, I found it was harder to implement the game mechanics I wanted in Ren'py, so I moved on. I worked in Unity for a while, but Unity is so powerful that it ran sluggishly on my computer. Ultimately, I've chosen Godot: It is free, open-source, and it can do everything I want it to do, and there are lots of resources out there for it.
step three: make/find assets
itch.io is your friend. There are so many assets out there to use! If you are an artist, great! Make your own. But if you are just a hobbyist/just getting started, consider supporting an artist and buying assets.

step four: ???
now you put it together and make a game!
Sounds easy? It isn't. But that's the step I'm on now.
in defense of AI
controversial subheading, I know, but I've also been using chatgpt to help me program. It's not perfect (in fact, a lot of the time, it is bad) but I've been treating it as a resource to help me learn. I ask it questions that I would ask google/reddit, and it points me to what sort of question I need to ask/systems I need to research. It helps make me, a total newb at programming, feel more confident in what I am doing.

Thoughts on: The One Within the Villainess
Manga: The One Within the Villainess
Amount read: Up to chapter 12
Impression: Middling positive.
On genre:
I'm not an Isekai person. I don't find wish fulfillment to be compelling in media. I don't care about game mechanics. I don't like characters going into the narrative with all the answers already and just needing to wait to put them into effect. Isekai may run the gamut of tones, with there being as much seinen edgelord bullshit as there is cute reincarnator sidesteps the plot of the in-fiction original work, so I won't say there's never conflict in isekai but... none of that does anything for me. With rare exceptions, the conflict almost always feels extremely shallow to me even when the stakes are high.
This is because they don't typically feel like they're about the characters, so much as they feel like lore infodumps and following a road map. Then top that off with a main character that has either a narratively convenient power that typically is powerful enough to overcome all conflict by default whilst requiring a lot of info-dumping— or the power is skipped in favor of short-cutting straight to the power being a lore and plot dump... they feel less like stories in and of themselves and more like reading a tabletop corebook. Lore is, in my mind, meant to be the stage upon which we tell stories, not the story itself— and I just don't think the stage can stand all its own and pretend to be a competent story.
And that is even assuming the stage was competent to begin with. A lot of Isekai also are very tropey and reference not just the broad strokes of other fantasy settings writ large but other isekai.
And there is no place this is more exemplary than the Villainess subgenre of isekai works.
They've all got this same basic framework: girl dies somehow and wakes up in an otome game she either played or knew about in her old life! However, she isn't the protagonist of the otome game, she's the villainess: an odious character who existed just to obstruct the heroine's chosen route in the game!
But here's the thing. I play otome games. I'm maybe not an expert, but I do have a casual acquaintanceship with the genre. The villainess rival plot that's endemic to this whole-ass genre? It stems from one of the earliest otome games ever, Angelique. However: it's not a trope that actually stuck around in otome games. To the point that Angelique's own sequels and spin-offs also didn't have the villainess rival. Similarly, the idea of the grindy items or whatever-- most modern otome games are not "dating sims", they're visual novels. You can think of them as choose your own adventure books, way more than a grindy dating sim where you have to raise stats, repeatedly talk to the dating options in certain areas on certain days, or give them items. The last set of actual popular otome games that had those elements is probably the [Heart/Spade/Diamond/etc] no Kuni no Alice series, I'm pretty sure? Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. But either way, I can say pretty confidently that Persona 5 is more of a dating sim than most otome games.
The fact is, these manga and light novels are all cribbing notes off each other, not otome games. So I have a grudge against them for that, first and foremost. It's like, okay you're talking shit about the problems and how terrible it is for the villainess to have to suffer just because she also liked the guy and her life is ALSO BAD and it's like. This is just not a thing. These works exist as critiques of a phenomenon that just isn't widespread and barely exists at all. You are all still just mad at Angelique-- or rather, because they don't know their "source material" at all, they're just empty shells of someone else's subversion of an extremely old game. And the subversion of ACTUALLY THE VILLAINESS IS FINE is also eroded even further by the fact a lot of them just decide to have the plot be actually the heroine is the real bad guy. Look at that hussy, chatting up these dudes above her station and stealing someone else's fiance. The issue isn't that the original plot of the game set up these girls as having their own happiness achievable only as mutually exclusive, implying women are all enemies competing for men, the real issue with the initial story is... genki girl bad, elegant girl good. I'm hating on a few specific manga here, but I'm sure there's more than that out there that have pulled that particular twist.
They have nothing to say. But when the framework of the story is we're going to fix the shit that went wrong in the original... it reads like they're trying to be commentary on the original genre. Which just falls so, so flat. Thanks for the commentary on a thing that isn't even a problem with the genre and also your commentary sucked.
So, enough generalities. Onto The One Within the Villainess.
The Plot:
The basic rundown: The villainess, Remilia, was replaced out as a child by Emi, a Japanese girl who was familar with the game Remilia is from. Emi did all the usual villainess isekai protagonist things-- rescued the male love interests from problems in their lives and came to occupy the same space as the protagnist did within the original game's story. Remilia, from within Emi, watched this and was satisfied because she had lived a loveless life with terrible parents but with Emi's memories of her own family in Japan and the second-hand experience of Emi's new life, she was able to finally experience happiness and became protective of Emi.

I won't say the plot is anything special. A lot of the plot points I have read beat for beat in other manga. It also has the issue of not being very familiar with otome games— aside from my usual otome games almost never have a villainess issue, the whole subplot about the shop shows that the writer is thinking of the mechanics of a mobile game. And granted, I've never played a mobile game otoge, maybe they really are like that. But with the genre as a whole taking cues from a very old otome game, it is weird to see the very modern cash shop mechanics thrown in there. It feels like indiscriminate cribbing off the notes of other isekai that just accidentally took something from the wrong source material-- that any one isekai is as good as any other to crib from, overlooking the thing that's supposed to make the subgenre distinct. Which makes sense-- if you don't play otoge, you wouldn't know what the mechanics were like so you probably wouldn't see an issue with a cash shop existing as a plot point and as a major part of a subplot.
Thus far, this review has mostly been negative. But that's because I've focused on what it has in common with most other villainess isekai— a genre I started with saying I don't like. So, next: what sets it apart and what it does well within its trappings.
The Art:
The art fucks /pos.
Manga is a visual medium, and having good art isn't a must persay, but it does a lot to influence audience perception of characters, setting a mood, and just the overall enjoyment of a series. Characters in this manga make great fucking faces. The otoge heroine just runs around making the shittiest faces, the clearest faux-cutesy but complete scumbag expressions ever. They're great. Emi and Remilia technically have the same face but they're very well distinguished by light shines and make-up, sure, but also the kind of expressions they make— Remilia playing at Emi is also distinguishable from what we saw of Emi. Things are telegraphed really well-- you can see the people around Emi being affected by the heroine because they also begin making shitty smug faces (though not to the same degree).
Also, about selling a mood: killing God isn't an exceptional plot point in a JP fantasy series. It's every JRPG I played growing up, it's my beloved Angel Sanctuary, etc. So how do you sell the audience on the gravity of killing this God that was only recently introduced? Radical art style shift from villainess isekai to surreal high contrast Madoka witch labyrinth was the answer this manga landed upon and damn if I can't say it doesn't work. That sequence was great. Excellent choice by the artist.
The character designs are also pretty good. Remilia and Pino Blanchet definitely pass for the villainess and heroine isekai tropes. The demon shopkeep also looks like a minor NPC that for some reason has been taken out of a minor role and been given a more major one, whilst also making sense with the larger world set-up as we get that. The demon king looks like a boy you might romance on an otome route. The gods have weird inhuman forms. The dwarf girls both look like dwarves, in a western fantasy sense whilst still fitting into an otome game! I'm not sure any of them really stand out to me as like damn good job, but I think as a whole they do help get across the setting-- both as a fantasy in its own right outside the "game's plot", and as an isekai into an "otome game".
Emi and Remilia:
Okay. Listen. Listen. I grew up in YGO fandom, alright? Bodyshare romance is peak. And I've got a thing for unrequited love, tragic loves, dead girl haunts the narrative she can no longer directly touch but everyone around her is still impacted by the hole she left. And, to clarify, that isn't what this manga is— I do not think this was written with the intention of being read as hot girl doppleganger ghost romance— but it's got the vibes. That even if that is not the intended reading of the text, it has an appeal that people into that could appreciate.
So, Emi is not textually dead, aside from the whole reincarnation thing. But she is functionally a ghost in the story. After she fell into despair, she retreated within herself and Remilia retook control. In-character, Remilia believes that Emi is as she was— alive, and now merely watching from behind the scenes. With this belief, she seeks to make Emi's ideal world so she can emerge and live happily again, just as she did before. There is no sign of Emi stirring, but Remilia is motivated by her memories and ideals, by what she gave her and honoring her memory. The Remilia the audience knows is a person changed, but not by someone who is in the story any longer. In this way, Emi "reads" as a ghost, haunting the narrative through her effect on Remilia. Dead girlfriend vibes, is what I'm saying.
There's also something to be said for the dynamic necessitated by the bodyshare where despite being deeply invested in the other's happiness, they do and do not have any personal relationship at all. They both know intimately and have never met the other person— we see Emi playing Remilia's game and crying over her; we see Remilia watching Emi living her life on a flat-screen television window in their mindscape. Without direct interaction, they nontheless are invested in each other, their highs and lows, their success and happiness. They're the other's biggest fan, but not in the sense that we usually think of in the modern era when someone says Parasocial. They are aware of each other, and both is individually important to the other. Whilst the situation is fantastical, it comes out feeling like an early internet friendship with both girls lurking on the other's blog, more than it feels like the relationship between stan and oshi.
On Female Characters:

Also, Pino's character flaws of being incredibly selfish and focused on romantic feelings without caring about the target of her affections as a person-- it rather neatly echoes the evil god featured in the manga as well. The two of them echo each other, so considering we see the exact same flaws in evil incel god and the main female antagonist... Yeah, I don't see the way Pino is written as a problem here.
The Demon King:
So, speaking of side-characters. The Demon King Angel is supposed to have been a secret route from within the game. And while I think this manga gets a lot of shit wrong about otome games I will say this for it: Angel absolutely feels like a true/secret route character. Gorgeous character design, genuinely tragic backstory with a good reason for him to have been an absolute bastard within the story. . . nailed it. Good job. A++. More than anyone else here, I actually buy him as an otoge character.
It's a little bit unfortunate for him that Remilia is only interested in Emi and making Emi's ideals a reality! That just makes him feel like he's properly executed even moreso though, and really drives home that this manga is about the relationship between Emi and Remilia more than any thing else though.
